Along with seven other Asian American studies scholars, I was asked to respond to the Asian American Literary Review's April 2012 symposium "Asian American Portraits of Encounter Between Word and Image" at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. "This thrilling exchange of visual portraits and literary response will be captured in our Fall-Winter 2012 issue." In this forthcoming virtual round table, I focus on artist Shizu Saldamando's work and the responses of writers Garrett Hongo and Anna Kazumi Stahl.

The symposium features:
Featured visual portraits by artists Roger Shimomura, Satomi Shirai, Shizu Saldamando, CYJO, Hye Yeon Nam, Zhang Chun Hong, and Tam Tran.

Featured literary responses by Bao Phi, Garrett Hongo, Anna Kazumi Stahl, Marie Myung-Ok Lee, Marianne Villanueva, Kazim Ali, and David Henry Hwang; additional invitees include Molly Gaudry, David Mura, Roy Kamada, Brian Komei Dempster, and others to be announced soon.

Participating scholars include Laura Kina, Alexandra Chang, Joseph Jeon, Susette Min, Floyd Cheung, Vincent Pham, Shilpa Davé, and Douglas Ishii.
